The Cultfort – Urban Cultural Fortress project is being developed and implemented by the Mihai Eminescu Trust (MET) Foundation. Through this project, we are transforming the Buchers’ Tower and Bastion into a space dedicated to high-quality, cultural events in Sighișoara.
However, we want to give you a bit of context: the space is right next to our office from the Cojocari Tower and we could not stand to see it abandoned and wasting away; as such, we found a way to highlight its value. The first financing round came from the Horizon Foundation (Holland) for the technical side of the project. Towards the end of 2022, conservation efforts supported by the second financing round from the Horizon Foundation are completed. Because this project is about a monument from the XVI century, we worked closely and carefully with archeologists. After this stage was done, we moved on to the next part of the project – to utilize the space – supported by a third financing party. We are now at this final part of the project, represented by the CULTFORT project which is explained in more detail below.
In the Autumn of 2022, we launched the Tour of Sighișoara for the locals, a series of guided, free walks to discover the city through new eyes. The guide is Peter Suciu and he is well-known in Sighișoara and very passionate about the local history. These seminars to document the city’s local history will take place across all neighborhoods, not just in the Medieval Citadel.
We also started our initiative to introduce children to architecture through the “Little Architect” program. An architect with experience worked with children from Joseph Haltrich School to discuss serious things in a simple way. There were 13 such meetings for two groups of 30 children.
Moreover, three meetings called Intercultural Café took place last year to discuss the city’s strategy to promote and preserve its culture. We met with those who are actively involved in the city’s cultural life to debate the direction of Sighișoara’s culture and how to better collaborate and use current resources. At the beginning of 2023, we organized an authorized course in cultural management for those interested in the subject, as well as a fundraising course for another round of participants.
